Salado Silver Spur Theatre to Audition Talent

March 5-7, for 2010 Season

SALADO, TEXAS (Feb. 22, 2010) – The footlights in Salado are beckoning to Central Texas performers for two great stage comedies. On March 5, 6, and 7, The Salado Silver Spur Theater will be casting actors and actresses for Neil Simon’s romantic comedy Barefoot In the Park, and for the Texas stage premier of Michael Russell’s Countergirls.

Auditions for both plays will be held concurrently from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday, March 5; from  10:00am to 6:00pm on Saturday, March 6; and from 2:00pm to 6:00pm on Sunday, March 7, at the Salado Silver Spur Theater.  The theater is located at 108 Royal St., in historic downtown Salado.   Appointments are encouraged, but not required, and can be made by calling 254-947-3456 or by e-mailing info@saladosilverspur.com.

“We are pleased to add these two great stage comedies to our 2010 season line-up, one a perennial favorite, and the other an exciting new work that’s destined to become a favorite,” said Executive Director Grainger Esch, co-founder of the six-year-old entertainment venue. Full details at: http://www.saladosilverspur.com/

“We are looking for adult actors and actresses of  many diverse types for these roles, with good verbal and physical comedy skills,” said Esch, who will be directing Barefoot In the Park.  He will be joined by Silver Spur staffer Tony Blackman, who will be directing Countergirls. “Countergirls focuses on the employees at the Collierville, Tennessee F.W. Woolworth’s lunch counter,” said Blackman.  “Set in the 1990’s, we learn about the lives and dreams of five unlikely friends who can’t help but make you laugh.”   Also present, to read cue lines for the auditioning performers, will be members of the Spuradical Players, the Silver Spur’s in-house comedy/variety ensemble.

“All performers are paid for their performances,” Esch emphasized. “In some cases, we also provide a gas stipend for rehearsals to out-of-town talent.” Shows are staged only on Friday evenings, Saturday afternoons and Saturday evenings. Rehearsals for Countergirls will begin Mar. 22, with performances from April 30 through May 22.  Rehearsals for Barefoot In the Park will begin in late July, with performances from August 27 through Sept. 18.  Here is a breakdown of the roles:

Countergirls Characters

Lib Stalsworth - early 40’s-Manager of the lunch counter at the Clarksville, Tennessee F.W. Woolworth.  She had a hit as a young country singer but chose to have a family instead of a singing career. She is the glue that holds so many lives together during the course of the play. She has faith in everyone, though at times her own patience is tried. Country singer is a plus.  Prepare a few bars of a classic country song (think Tammy Wynette or Loretta Lynn)

Betty Ruth Williams - late 30’s-a waitress at the lunch counter and Lib’s best friend from high school. She recently returned from Texas and is in the throes of a divorce.

Lynette Henderson - 60’s - a 25 year veteran of the lunch counter. She’s the crusty career waitress whose biggest fear is growing old and losing her independence-and her job.

Janita Womsley - late teens/early 20’s - part-time waitress and candy counter clerk. She is a Pentecostal preacher's daughter who has "star" ambitions, a voice to rival that of any country music queen, and a salty tongue that belies her sweetness and innocence. She would like nothing better than to be the next Dolly Parton or Tammy Wynette. Country singer a plus.

Donnie Ray Nicely - late 20’s/early 30’s. Donnie Ray is the orphan son of another of Lib’s friends, and the janitor and general caretaker of the lunch counter. He’s a little slow but has a heart of gold.  He often communicates with phrases he’s read or heard on the radio or television.

Barefoot In the Park Characters

Corie Bratter – Young newlywed, free-spirited, impulsive

Paul Bratter – Young newlywed lawyer, practical, conservative

Ethel Banks – Corie’s mother, mid-fifties, lives alone in New Jersey, practical, more like her son-in-law than her daughter

Victor Velasco – Charming, eccentric, middle-aged neighbor

Telephone Repair Man – minor character role, not age specific

Delivery man – non-speaking role, not age specific

Auditioning actors will cold-read from scripts, but may also bring prepared monologues. Headshots and resumes are preferred, but a snapshot can be provided with a Spur audition form.   Photos and resumes may also be e-mailed to info@saladosilverspur.com.
